PRINCIPLES REGARDING HUNGER STRIKES

 

 

The American Medical Student Association:

 

1.             URGES healthcare professionals to uphold patient autonomy, as recognized by the 1975 Declaration of Tokyo and Declaration of Malta, such that medically informed and competent prisoners may refuse nourishment.  Physicians should not be involved in and should actively oppose the force-feeding of prisoners or detainees at any facilities, in the US or on foreign soil.
