PPP HomePRINCIPLES REGARDING GENETICS
The
American Medical Student Association:
1. OPPOSES the patenting of the
unmodified nucleotide and/or amino acid sequences of human genes and/or
proteins. (2002)
2. RECOGNIZES the value of intellectual
property rights in general and SUPPORTS the patenting of specific diagnostic
and therapeutic products based on human genetic material. (2002)
3. SUPPORTS the mandatory public
disclosure of any such similar genetic information that is discovered by an
institution within standard, peer-reviewed scientific publishing forums to
allow for complete access by all research or other institutions whether public
or private. (2002)
