Get Involved in AMSA's Action Committees

For years, AMSA's action committee leaderss have referred to their groups as the heart and soul of AMSA. And in many ways they are. While the Board of Trustees governs the organization, the action committees produce ideas and projects. AMSA's ten committees represent areas the Association feels all medical students should value as vital in becoming a socially responsible physician/healer. They promote these areas of interest and associated projects to AMSA members on national, regional and local levels and are integral in helping AMSA maintain its dynamic view of medicine amidst tremendous and rapid change. They are also a frontline for the association's dedication to redefining the culture and activities of medicine.

GET INVOLVED

  • Subscribe to one or more of AMSA's Action Committee and Interest Group listserves as a way to network with students sharing your similar interests. This is a simple and very beneficial service.

  • Visit the Local Project Directory and find out what chapters across the country are doing.

  • Visit our Action Committee and Interest Group pages to see what projects are currently underway and how YOU can get involved.

  • If a project doesn't already exist, start a new one. Projects can be started in two ways:

    1. A vote by members of an Action Committee at the AMSA national convention in March, or

    2. Submission of a project proposal to AMSA's Director of Student Programming during the year. The person who authors a proposal generally becomes the project coordinator.

  • Submit an article for the Action Committee section in The New Physician magazine. Contact AMSA Focus for information and deadlines.

  • Become an Action Committee Liaison at your local AMSA chapter. Generate enthusiasm and to act as a resource for local students regarding AMSA's ACs, IGs and advocacy groups.

  • Contact the Director of Student Programming for information on our Issue Response Groups (IRGs) or submit a proposal online. IRGs are formed by the AMSA House of Delegates at national convention to address issues of a limited time span (1-2 years). They provide a way for students to address a timely issue immediately by bringing students together to develop a concrete product or reach a definite endpoint. A good example of this is the work AMSA did with the NRMP to change the Residency Match algorithm.

  • Learn more about Action Committee and Interest Group activities by contacting the coordinators directly. They are all fellow medical students chosen to lead and provide support to our various committees and interest groups.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP
New leaders are chosen each year and are open only to AMSA members. If interested in any of these positions, contact the current leader for more info.
