Get Involved in ICAM

AMSA welcomes students to join in our efforts to transform medical education. Through the Humanistic Medicine action committee and the EDCAM grant project, AMSA offers numerous educational and leadership opportunities for students to get involved.

Find a Mentor

Plan a Project at Your School
Organize a lecture series on complementary and alternative medicine, set up a shadowing program with holistic doctors, start a class on humanistic medicine, or create a interest group for students to practice meditation, massage, and nutrition together. This project-in-a-box helps you get started on and run with these great ideas.

National ICAM Student Network
A medical student forum for networking, sharing project ideas/resources, and advocacy for inclusion of ICAM into medical education.

AMSA Local Project Grants
Provides funding for students interested in CAM programming at their school.

CAM Leadership Training Program
This weeklong training offers 20 medical students a chance to spend one week during the summer learning about CAM and leadership skills at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies.

Humanistic Elective in alternative medicine, Activism and Reflective Transformation (HEART)
A 4-week residential elective rotation designed for 4th year medical students, focused on coursework in complementary and alternative medicine, community living, personal transformation and self-care.

Circle of Healers Retreats
These retreats are inspired with activity, heartfelt conversation, meditation, healthy lifestyle practices, music, bonfires, and powerful friendships. During the retreat, students learn about alternative modalities and humanistic approaches to patient interactions and met physicians who have integrated these into their practice.

EDCAM Curriculum for Medical Schools
Through funds provided by the EDCAM project, 6 medical schools are pilot testing a comprehensive CAM curriculum over the next 3 years. Read the curriculum summary and EDCAM grant summary for more information.
