Cancer Survivor Underwater Photoshoot!

By By Melina Benson
Chair, AMSA Wellness and Student Life

I hope to meet you at Annual Convention in New Orleans! In advance of Friday's session entitled, "The Role of Social Communities in Cancer Support", I wanted to share a touching link from HuffingtonPost. The session speakers are the founders of, a searchable online community of cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones. The site aims to empower people who bear the weight of this diagnosis by facilitating communication between its members. What a great idea, right? Everyone else seems to think so; the site has won multiple accolades.

Mailet Lopez, founder of, organized a photoshoot by underwater photography Erena Shimoda. The subjects are cancer survivors, and the results are touching and charming. Take a look and allow yourself to step outside of the provider shoes and into the role of a patient embracing freedom.
