EFPC Conference, October 12-13

Barbara Kornblau, JD Barbara Kornblau, JD, Executive Director of the Society for Participatory Medicine, to keynote at EFPC - Philadelphia!

Health care practice and health care education are rapidly evolving through the applications of new technologies, new ways of communicating and building community, and new approaches to patient-centered, interprofessional health care delivery. These innovations – from electronic health records (EHR) and iPhone apps for single-lead EKGs to Facebook, Twitter, and Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH) – may serve as tools to solve many health care challenges. But they also present new challenges and new questions which you must be prepared to address. The conference will feature:

  • Med school of the future: the “flipped classroom”
  • Stethoscope, otoscope…iPhone(?): the rapid expansion of smart phone medical apps
  • Beyond patient-centered: the new movement for “participatory medicine”
  • Transdisciplinary education: preparing you for team-based care delivery
  • Clinical skills sessions: workshops on suturing, airway management, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, OSCEs, and more
  • Professional skills sessions: workshops on networking, communications, team building, personal statement writing, CV preparation, and more

Pre-Conference Symposia, October 11

Medical Professionalism & Health Care Innovations

You are developing your professional and personal identity as a physician through your education and your experiences. Furthermore, different environments, communities, philosophies, and even technology innovations are acting to influence your values and commitments which shape your behaviors. This symposium will address:

  • Professionalism and social media: the good, the bad, and the ugly
  • Social networks and health outcomes improvements
  • Creating the necessary “culture of respect” as the basis for the patient safety movement
  • Pens, Pills, and Conflict of Interest: what students can do to protect themselves against pharmaceutical marketing influence
  • Going “viral”: social media and advocacy campaigns

Health Care for All

After the 2012 Supreme Court decision regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), we are now moving closer to the actual implementation of many of the Act’s provisions. While the ACA is a step in the right direction, we must continue to advocate for comprehensive reform, resulting in a system in which health care, the right of the people, is truly health care for all. This symposium will address:

  • History of health care reform in the US
  • “Who’s who” in current health care reform movements and debates
  • The Single Payer solution
  • The role of public narrative in framing the debate
  • Advocacy and grassroots organizing
