EFPC Conference, October 19-20

Dr. David Satcher Dr. David Satcher, Former US Surgeon General to keynote at EFPC - Atlanta!

Our health care system operates within the larger structure and organization of our society. Far too often, the health care system reflects – and replicates – the structural injustices of racism, classism, sexism, and homophobia which are found throughout our political, economic, and cultural institutions. There is a growing body of data which relates health outcomes not only to personal interventions between patients and providers, but also to structural, socio-political and socio-economic factors. The feminist movement has made the claim that “the personal is political”: this is just as true today as it was then, and can be applied across the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality. This conference will feature:

  • From Tuskegee to today: the recent history of racism in US health care
  • The economics of food: from factory farms to food deserts
  • The experiences of trans folk in health care
  • Creating safe space for gender and sexual minority patients and providers
  • Where are the black male applicants: the crisis of diversity for medical education
  • Advocating for women’s reproductive health care rights and access
  • Clinical skills sessions: workshops on suturing, airway management, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, OSCEs, and more
  • Professional skills sessions: workshops on networking, communications, team building, personal statement writing, CV preparation, and more

Pre-Conference Symposia, October 18

Symposia sponsored in part by the SHLI and MSM Alliance Group.

Gender & Sexual Health Advocacy

Far too often, in discussions of gender and sexuality, gender is assumed to be a “women’s issue” and sexuality is assumed to be a “gay men’s issue.” And yet, it is true that gender and sexuality influence, limit, or even determine how all of us experience ourselves, others, and the world around us. Holistic care and wellness for patients, communities, and providers themselves must include comprehensive, open, honest, and supportive discussions about the diverse experiences of human gender and sexuality. This symposium will address:

  • Becoming visible: case studies in women’s and LGBTQI empowerment in health care
  • Of borders and abortion: international and “underground” movements to ensure abortion access
  • Hope is not a form of birth control: the state of sexual and reproductive education in the US
  • Sharing our stories of gender and sexual health empowerment
  • Gender and sexual health advocacy training

Structural Competency

For some time now, the health care professions have been engaged in a conversation about cultural competency. While closely related to this, structural competency goes beyond the cultural specificities of patient care to address the larger social (structural) inequalities of race, gender, economics, and “place.” It is essential that we have a new conversation among health care providers, patients, urban planners, sociologists, and community organizers regarding these structural issues at the heart of the health care challenges we face today. This symposium will address:

  • Social determinants of health
  • Racial and ethnic disparities in health care access and outcomes
  • Intersectionality: the experiences of African American women living with HIV/AIDS
  • Global health “voluntourism”: questions of ethics, sustainability, and colonialism
  • Grassroots organizing and building intentional communities
