The integration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) health issues into medical school curricula across the United States continues to be varied. Medical students face a variety of environments at their respective institutions regarding LGBT educational and health issues. With AMSA and the AMA advocating for greater inclusion of LGBT issues both in and out of the classroom and clinic, it is becoming ever more important to ensure that medical schools are fulfilling their obligations to provided the most complete medical education experience for their students. Unfortunately, many students attend institutions that are hostile or apathetic to LGBT issues and concerns. The purpose of this institute is to bring together medical students from a broad variety of educational environments and train them in how to become LGBT student leaders at their schools in regard to forming and sustaining student organizations, advocating for curriculum reform, and keeping in touch with national organizations designed to support their goals.
In addition to providing education programming, the AMSA LGBT Leadership Institute will serve as a program at which students can network and form friendships from which to draw support and inspiration during medical school.
