Community Public Health Institute

January 27-30, 2011
AMSA National Headquarters, Reston, VA

Application Deadline: December 27, 2010

As the longest running AMSA institute, the Community and Public Health Institute (CPHI) has imparted necessary skills to combat public health issues to many future physicians-in-training. The time for healthcare reform is upon us and this institute will instill an understanding of the integral role that public health plays in our healthcare system. In the 1850’s, 10 years before the development of the germ theory, a British Physician, John Snow, published his investigation into the water supply and cholera outbreaks in Soho, London. Through his intervention, the cholera epidemic ended. He acted as a change agent of his time. We need change agents in the field of public health today in order to affect change in our community for the wellbeing of our nation’s health.

As a CPHI participant, you will be fully immersed in the field of public health. This experience will enrich your medical education and allow for an appreciation of public health as a complement to medicine. You will be given the opportunity to learn and expand your knowledge and skills necessary to implement and carry out a community health project. An understanding of policy and the federal government’s role in public health will be presented to you through participating in a lobbying day on Capitol Hill and listening to guest speakers. This institute will also provide you with the ability to network with like-minded individuals and brainstorm and share ideas for improving your community.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this institute, participants will be able to:

  • Learn and develop public health skills necessary to implement and successfully carry out your community public health project.
  • Appreciate how public health leaders at the national and local levels use resources, creativity, partnerships and leadership to address health problems and reduce disparity.
  • Participate and utilize principles and skills of political lobbying and learn how national policy decisions can affect the efforts of your community.
