Sonia Lazreg
AMSA/CIR Health Justice Fellow

Sonia Lazreg is a student at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine pursuing a medical degree and a Masters in Public Health. She has a background in anthropology and community organizing and has worked in such varied places as the National Park System, a non-profit food pantry, a cornfield maze and the backcountry of Tanzania. She has participated in electoral campaigns, delivered malaria education and mosquito nets, pursued environmental policy shifts, and attempted to empower students through leadership training and by educating others about the successes of past activist movements.

Sonia is very interested in the interaction of people and their environments and how these interactions affect the health of individuals, humanity, and ecosystems throughout the world. As Health Justice Fellow in 2011-2012, she will continue drawing attention to medical work hours and work design as they pertain to patient safety, teach grassroots organizing skills, build labor solidarity in medicine and explore the obligation of medical schools and residencies to be socially accountable.
