Colin first became heavily involved in AMSA after meeting past Fellows and serving as an AMSA intern prior to starting medical school. He remembers being in awe of the passion and drive of AMSA national leaders and couldn’t wait to begin medical school that following semester.
What Colin quickly realized was that the medical school curriculum, while providing a robust medical education, did not offer him the exciting opportunities in advocacy that he had experienced as an AMSA intern. Since that time, AMSA has been his outlet for advocacy and learning outside of the conventional medical education.
Colin was born in Scotland but has lived in the United States since 1987. He’s a non-traditional student, which he says, “just means that I’m older!” He earned his B.A. in Music from a small liberal arts school in Portland, Oregon - a totally impractical decision that he hasn’t regretted for a second! He’s worked in retail, bartending, travel and EMS. Colin is currently finishing up his third year at the University of Washington School of Medicine and is excited to take a year out from his clinical studies to serve as AMSA’s Education and Advocacy Fellow.
