We Give Because They Can't

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) supports a discriminatory policy that prohibits men who have had sexual contact with men, even once, since 1977, from donating blood for life. In reality, men who have sex with men (MSM) is a diverse group of individuals with different sexual behaviors and types of relationships. We have learned a good deal about AIDS transmission since its early ages and recognize that individuals with risky behaviors, not heterogeneous groups, are at higher risk for HIV/AIDS. While the Gender and Sexuality committee supports the goals of blood drives, it would be irresponsible for us to ignore this unwarranted and prejudiced policy. During the 2010 AMSA Convention, we organized a protest entitled, "We Give Because They Can't".*

Please feel free to adapt the materials below to use during blood drives at your schools/institutions. The materials include a letter to the FDA, a flyer, and a document that can be printed as stickers ("I Give Because They Can't"). Consider advising the Red Cross of your planned action before the day of the drive. Good luck!
