Public Health Management*
*required by the Boonshoft Physician Leadership Development Program
Program Strengths: The Boonshoft Physician Leadership Development Program offers students management and leadership skills, as well as knowledge of health economics and population-based medicine. It is designed to develop future leaders of the health care system, including CEOs of health care organizations, such as hospital systems, government agencies and for-profit health care companies. Students in the program attend monthly physician leadership sessions designed to improve their analytic, business and management skills. During this monthly program, students participate in a series of seminars with M.D./M.B.A. students around the theme of leadership.

The program is fully integrated over five years, culminating with a dual degree—the M.D. and a Master of Public Health with a Concentration in Public Health Management. The coursework for the two degrees is completed in an integrated fashion over a period of five years. Unlike many other M.D./M.P.H. programs that are essentially year-out programs, this program begins in the first year and ends in the fifth, although most of the course work for the M.P.H. is spread over the third, fourth and fifth years. The complete M.D. curriculum is taught; there is no compromise on education for either degree.
To Apply: You may apply to the program while applying to medical school, after acceptance to medical school, or during the 1st year of medical school (if space is still available).

Program Info: The primary goal of the dual D.O./M.P.H. program is to provide clinical professionals specialized public health training to develop, integrate, and apply culturally-competent social, psychological and biomedical approaches to the promotion and preservation of health. The D.O./M.P.H. curriculum is designed so that the M.P.H. degree requirements can be completed during the four years of medical education at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM). To receive the M.P.H. degree at the time of medical school graduation, the dual degree student must enter the M.P.H. program in the summer prior to matriculation into medical school. The plan for completion of the M.P.H. simultaneously with the D.O. degree is shown below. Another option for the dual degree D.O./M.P.H. student is to extend the time period to complete the public health and medical school degree to five years and register in public health courses between Year 2 and 3 of the traditional medical school curriculum.

MPH Tracks for MD/MPH Students: Generalist
Program Strengths: The MPH Program at UTMB is administered by the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health (PMCH). Enrollment in the MPH Program is open only to UTMB medical students, residents, and fellows and non-UTMB medical doctors in preventive medicine residencies. The UTMB MPH degree provides this select group of students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to succeed in careers that bridge medicine and public health.

The PMCH graduate education environment provides a unique interdisciplinary and interprofessional experience for MPH students. M.D. and Ph.D. teaching faculty members come from a range of clinical and population health science disciplines and have varied areas of research expertise. Students enrolled in the MPH and other PMCH degree programs in clinical and population health sciences include medical students and residents, nurses and other health care professionals, and traditional graduate students. The MPH Program originally was developed to serve the Preventive Medicine Residencies at UTMB. These MPH graduates have gone on to successful careers in aerospace medicine, occupational medicine, and governmental public health practice.
To Apply: Students already enrolled in the UTMB School of Medicine may apply for admission to the MPH during their 3rd year of medical school. The MPH is offered through the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Applicants must complete the GSBS online application, provide three letters of reference, submit a current UTMB transcript, and pay the appropriate application fee. GRE and TOEFL scores are waived.
